Membership Information
Membership and registration qualifications and procedures are established by the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists Provincial Council under authority of The Agrologists Act of Manitoba. Council prescribes the education and other qualifications for registration.
There are two categories of membership in the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists: practicing, and non-practicing.
Practicing:
Qualifications/Title:
Professional Agrologist (P.Ag.): successful completion of a four year university degree equivalent to the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree from the University of Manitoba. The course content of the university education obtained on this basis will contain the required number of courses in agrology/agriculture that will assure initial competency in a defined scope of practice. Applicants with less than three years of Canadian work experience in agrology obtained after graduation will in most cases* be required to enter the Agrologist in Training program and practice for a minimum of one year with the professional designation, AIT.
Technical Agrologist (Tech.Ag.): minimum two year university diploma in agriculture equivalent to a diploma in Agriculture from the University of Manitoba, or, similar defined and specific programs from Assiniboine Community College**. Applicants with less than three years of Canadian work experience in agrology obtained after graduation will be required to enter the Agrologist in Training program and practice for a minimum of one year with the professional designation, TAIT. The Technical Agrologist designation only applies in Manitoba and may not be accepted for professional registration in other provinces.
*Applicants with advanced degrees may be given credit for Canadian work experience during their post-graduate studies at the discretion of the MIA. Determinations will be made on the basis of the relevancy of the work to the intended career path in the practice of agrology.
** Agri-business and Land and Water Management Programs
Non-Practicing:
Affiliate: For those who are eligible for a practicing designation, but do not wish to practice agrology at the current time.
Associate: For those who do not meet the educational requirements for membership, but still wish to be associated with MIA.
