About the MIA | MIA Provincial Council | MIA Awards

Twenty-Five-Year Pins

  • Members of Manitoba Institute of Agrologists who have completed 25 years of professional membership; includes life and charter members.
  • Eligible members will be identified by Institute Registrar's Office.
  • Provincial Council shall approve all recipients prior to presentation.
  • Arrangements for presentations are made by the MIA Honors and Awards Committee; normally, the annual meeting will be the presentation location with alternate presentations at branch meetings.

Honorary Membership

  • To recognize and honor a non-member of the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists who has made an outstanding contribution in any field of the agricultural industry.
  • Honorary members need not be selected every year.
  • An Honorary Member shall be entitled to all rights and privileges of an agrologist, except the right to vote, hold office, or use the designation agrologist

Distinguished Agrologist Award

  • Presented to a person of acknowledged professional eminence and distinction or of outstanding service to the institute in the field of agrology.
  • One member may be elected each year.
  • The nominee shall have been a member of the institute for ten (10) years.
  • Nominations are to be submitted to the Provincial Council under the signatures of ten members in good standing or by a branch of the institute.
  • Election of Distinguished Agrologist shall require the unanimous approval of Council.

Institute Life Membership

Nominations may be of any member who has retired from the practice of agrology. Contribution to the institute, its branches and affiliates, to the practice of agrology and to the community shall be considered.

H.D. McRorie Recognition Award

A member who has and/or continues to contribute to the growth and development of the profession of agrology through services to the Institute as well as consistently displaying the best attributes of an agrologist - a professional in every sense - able, articulate and current in his/her chosen field.

Journalism Award

To recognize outstanding agriculture journalism through recognition of a print or broadcast journalist who has made a significant contribution to public understanding of the Agri-food industry or a specific current agri-food issue.

Criteria for selection

  • Extent and depth of research
  • Clarity of presentation
  • Need for the feature (based on public's lack of knowledge or misinformation) Timeliness

Awarded at the discretion of the MIA Honors & Awards Committee in consultation with the Publicity Committee. There will be no more than one award per year; no award will be presented if there is no suitable recipient. Form of award will be at the discretion of the committee; it should include an engraved plaque or certificate

Procedure

Nominations open at all times.

All Agrologists are encouraged to submit nominations. Branch and Council members are mainly responsible for making nominations.

For Print Medium: provide a copy of the article (or series); date, paper or magazine, writer. Broadcast: nominate immediately including tone of broadcast, outlet, date, time of report, and reporter (broadcaster) Note - broadcast regulations require that a copy of a radio air-tape be kept for 30 days; contact must be made immediately to obtain a copy.
